It’s been a long wait for Borderlands fans, but the next release in the popular looter shooter is about to drop. Borderlands 4 will launch on September 12, 2025. But who are the playable characters in Borderlands 4? And will Borderlands 4 have returning characters? We’ve got all the answers you need!
There’s a massive buzz around the new Borderlands 4 Vault Hunters. While we don’t know everything about them yet, Gearbox Software has let a few details slip. Upon release, there will be 4 Vault Hunters available. Like previous releases, each Vault Hunter is customizable and has their own unique personality, backstory, and combat specialities.
Let’s have a look at what we know so far about the Borderlands 4 Vault Hunters.
Amon the Forgeknight has a dark backstory. Brought up in a Vault-monster cult that was eventually destroyed by its object of worship, Amon is an introspective warrior-poet dedicated to vengeance. His play style is based around melee attacks with his sword and shield. But Amon also has Forge Drones in his spine and arms, and can transform his weaponry with psychic powers.
Borderlands 3 players will immediately recognise that Harlowe hails from the Traunt family. Quirky and tech- and gadget-oriented, Harlowe is described as a genius with an odd sense of humour. As an ex-Maliwan combat scientist, Harlowe has a crazy array of weapons that can manipulate gravity. Able to fire destructive disco balls, she no doubt has other surprises in store for us.
As a Tediore soldier, Rafa was equipped with an exoskeleton to help him survive on other planets. Since Rafa went AWOL from Tediore, his Deadframe exoskeleton will eventually cause his death. Despite this, he’s got an exuberant personality and is bristling with lasers, energy blades, and shoulder-mounted cannons. Rumour has it that Rafa will be the most agile Vault Hunter in the series so far.
Sarcastic and cynical with a dark past, Vex is the most sinister and creepy Siren ever in the Borderlands universe. Capable of life-stealing and summoning Reapers and Spectres at will, Vex can also deliver massive amounts of kinetic damage. Her known action skills include Incarnate, a Phase Explosion that heals Vex while destroying enemies. Vex can also summon a huge cat-like creature called Trouble, who can teleport and wreak havoc among enemies.
It wouldn’t be Borderlands without a few familiar faces. The following characters are all returning in Borderlands 4:
Yes, Claptrap is returning with his non-stop chatter and quips. Some players love him, others find Claptrap irritating. That’s probably why the Gearbox developers added a feature that can lower his volume, or even mute him altogether!
Yes! As one of Borderland’s most iconic characters, Mad Moxxi will reappear to help the Vault Hunters. The Underdome hostess has rebuilt her empire on Kairos and continues to provide quests and guidance.
Some fans may be disappointed by the news, but it seems unlikely that Borderlands 4 will feature Tiny Tina. On the bright side, Gearbox just might be saving her for another Tiny Tina's Wonderlands adventure.
Besides Claptrap and Moxxi, our beloved Vault Hunter Zane also joins the cast, but only as an NPC. If you remember the first Borderlands, you might see the boss Nine-Toes lurking around somewhere. Even Lilith may appear, but this isn’t confirmed.
Borderlands 4 is set to be another action-packed, darkly humorous adventure. New player abilities, skills, and weapons are pretty much guaranteed.
