Recently, the rumor mill about the successor to the Nintendo Switch has been working overtime. There is more information available about a possible release date, backwards compatibility, technical specifications, and the differences between the Switch V1 and V2. This is everything we know about the Nintendo Switch 2!
The latest rumor about the Nintendo Switch 2 release date suggests that the console will come out in the first quarter of 2025. This rumor comes from Brazilian journalist Pedro Henrique Lutti Lippe, who claims in a YouTube video to have received this information from five different sources. These sources would have indicated that the release of the Nintendo Switch 2 is delayed, after gaming website VGC previously claimed that the new console would come out in 2024.
A release in the first quarter of 2025 seems reasonable, as the original Nintendo Switch was also released in the first quarter of the year, namely on March 3, 2017. If Nintendo copies this release date exactly (the first Friday of March), the release date of the Nintendo Switch 2 would fall on March 7, 2025. This is not yet officially confirmed.
Although nothing official has been announced about the backwards compatibility of the Nintendo Switch 2, the new console will support this feature according to Universo Nintendo. This rumor seems to be in line with a statement from Nintendo director Shuntaro Furukawa, who stated in 2022: "Nintendo is focused on building long-term relationships with its customers. While we continue to release new Nintendo Switch software, our goal is also to maintain relationships between hardware generations through services that use Nintendo Accounts." It thus appears that the Nintendo Switch 2 will indeed be backwards compatible.
According to the current rumors from VGC and Bloomberg, these are the specifications of the Nintendo Switch 2:
In the table below, you'll find the main differences between the Nintendo Switch V1 and V2 based on the current rumors.
Switch V1 | Switch V2 | |
Chip | Nvidia Tegra X1 (2015) | Nvidia T239 (2024) |
RAM | 4 GB LPDDR4 | 8 GB LPDDR5 |
Storage | 32 GB | 64 GB |
Screen | 6.2-inch LCD screen | 8-inch LCD screen |
Based on the above specifications, the Switch V2 will primarily get a boost in performance. The new Nvidia chip guarantees better graphics, and thereby the performance of the new Switch would be comparable to that of the PS4 and the Xbox One, according to rumors from The Verge. The new screen, unfortunately, is still an LCD screen (and not an extra crisp OLED screen), but significantly larger. In addition, the design of the Switch V2 will supposedly not differ much from its predecessor. Thus, we can probably still expect a "hybrid" system with both a handheld mode and a docking function. Lastly, a doubling of the RAM is also a nice bonus as it allows for faster game loading and switching between games.
According to a rumor from GamesIndustry.biz, the price of the Nintendo Switch 2 would be around €400. This price is of course not yet officially confirmed, but looking at the competitors of the Nintendo Switch 2, such as the Steam Deck OLED, the PlayStation Portal, and the Asus ROG Ally, this price seems quite realistic.
