Remember being consumed for days by Flappy Bird or competing against your friends for the longest run in Subway Surfers. A lot of these games are still up and running in the Google Play Store.
Ready for a trip down memory lane? These are the most classic mobile games that you can still download in the Google Play Store.
Even alligators need a good shower every once in a while! But Swampy has some trouble in his bathroom, and you need to help him. You do so by guiding the water through obstacles, right into his shower. You can clearly see why this game had lots of us hooked: the alligator characters are very well designed and all have their own personality that’s shown well in the cutscenes and animations. Aside from that, the puzzles are still fun to figure out today!
In Cut the Rope, you have to help a hungry monster get his favourite snack, candy. The sweet goods are tied up in ropes, and you have to solve creative puzzles to get it to the green character. The puzzles include smart elements that really had all of us second guessing the best solution. You just had to try and try again until you got it right. Once you managed to find the way out, it felt amazing!
Do you remember this cute little alien? Doodle Jump quite literally has the essence of the game in its name: a doodle that jumps. In different worlds ranging from a frozen wasteland to a literal textbook, you have to help the green character get back to its spaceship by jumping on platforms. And yes, the Doodle has matching outfits for every environment.
Crossy Road must be the definition of a simple yet addictive game. You start out as a chicken that needs to cross a busy road, that’s it. Even the art style might seem straightforward at first, but once you play you can really see how much fun the creators had while making the game. The world is full of amusing details, and the many characters you can unlock in this game will keep you entertained for hours on end.
Apparently, running endlessly through a temple and collecting golden coins as you go along, is one of the best ways to spend literally hundreds of hours on your phone. The quick turning of corners, sliding, ducking and jumping over obstacles as the game slowly speeds up, had everyone on the edge of their seat. Judging by the many spin-offs it inspired, Temple Run definitely changed the endless runner genre forever.
Like many iconic mobile games, Fruit Ninja has a fairly simple goal: fruit is thrown up into your screen, and you have to use your finger to cut it in half. We’re not sure if it’s the simplicity of the gameplay, colourful images or the satisfaction of cutting something perfectly in half that makes this game so addictive. But it absolutely works! Even after 14 years, Fruit Ninja still has over 500 million downloads.
Who remembers this insane shark adventure? In Hungry Shark Evolution, you play as a ravenous great white that has to survive the wide ocean by devouring literally anything and anyone in its way. But the fun in this game lies in levelling up your baby shark and using items, like rockets and bombs, to become the absolute king of the sea. A very entertaining mobile game to dive back into if you haven’t picked up this classic in a while.
It’s fairly obvious to see where Subway Surfers got their inspiration. But this game took the Temple Run format and put its own creative spin on it. What made Subway Surfers so addictive is not only the endless gameplay, but also the many characters, boosts, and items you could unlock. And in more recent years, Subway Surfers gameplay has become a staple to put under boring voice-over TikToks to help you pay attention to the story.
Jetpack Joyride was released back in 2011 and was instantly popular. It’s clear to see why, as the game to this day still looks amazing. There’s just something about the almost pixelated, cartoony world that draws you in, and the game’s immaculate attention to detail makes it even more engaging. Just look at the robot-suit that’s used as a level up. Aside from that, the never-ending flying on your jetpack through different landscapes is just really addictive.
Who would’ve guessed that a game about a man using his super plants to fight zombies, would become such a worldwide phenomenon? From pea-shooters to cherry bombs, the creativity in this game really pops off the screen. Not to mention the strategy possibilities. With the 50 plants in your arsenal and free choice in how to arrange them on the battlefield, you really have to put in some effort to create the perfect front line. Plants vs. Zombies is definitely a game worth revisiting, even after 15 years.
