5. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Clair Obscur is a French art term for ‘light-dark’. It’s a technique popular in painting that uses bold contrasts between light and shadow to bring drama and depth to the canvas. This fits the mood and story of the game perfectly.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is set in an alternate universe where, once a year, a ritual called The Gommage takes place. During The Gommage, a god-like entity called The Paintress paints a number in the sky. Once she finishes her artwork, everyone of that age turns to smoke and vanishes from existence. The story of the game begins just after The Paintress has painted the number 33.

With such an interesting set-up for a story, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is already a dream for RPG lovers. If you’re also a fan of interesting art styles, then this is definitely the game for you. The term Clair Obscur wasn’t just picked because it sounded cool; it’s really the core of the game. The world is entirely based on the distinct Belle Époque aesthetic, and French culture is evident throughout the game, from the soundtrack to the character design.

4. Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 was first released in 2020, but it’s still a go-to RPG for many gamers. The story takes place sometime after an economic collapse, after which America is forced to rely on large corporations to survive. Many of these corporations operate above the law and deal in weapons, robotics, or cybernetics. You play as V, who has to complete an important mission in Night City, the most violent and dangerous city in this corporate-led world.

What’s cool about Cyberpunk 2077 is that the character creation system also allows you to choose the character's background. This has a big impact on how the game plays out and how NPCs and other characters interact with you.

The game is heavily inspired by science fiction works like ‘Blade Runner’ and ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?’, which gives the game a moody, cinematic look. This vibe is not only reflected in the visuals but also in the complex storytelling and character design.

3. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a classic fantasy RPG. What’s even better is that CD Projekt Red recently released a remastered version of the game that introduces lots of updates, visual enhancements, performance improvements and new additions to the gameplay. So, plenty of reasons to dive back into the game or try it for the first time.

In Wild Hunt, you play as the monster hunter Geralt of Rivia. You follow him on his journey as he searches for Ciri, his adopted daughter. She’s being chased by a spectral army known as the Wild Hunt.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is known for seamlessly combining difficult subject matter with gameplay. Many side quests cover heavy topics like murder, domestic abuse, miscarriage, abortion or suicide. The game doesn’t outright tell you what’s good and what’s bad; instead, it operates in a morally grey area. It lets you explore and form your own opinions on the matter, and provides room to act it out in the game. Your actions, in turn, shape the game.

2. Kingdom Come: Deliverance II

Ever dreamed of becoming a knight in medieval Europe? Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is absolutely the game for you! The story continues Henry of Skalitz's journey, picking up right after the events of the first game. Henry pursues his quest for justice within a civil conflict between King Wenceslas IV and his half-brother, Sigismund of Hungary. Expect bloody swordfights, nights in taverns and endless villages, cities and other medieval areas to explore.

When it comes to RPGs, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is widely considered one of the best modern games in this genre. It’s not only a game to be played, but a game to be lived in. The world is huge, and there are side quests, activities, people and other things to explore in every direction.

It goes to great lengths to make everything as real as possible. Not only is the story's conflict largely based on real historical events, but the gameplay is also grounded in realism. The combat system can be a bit annoying and difficult, but that’s because you’re meant to be training for it. Henry is not an amazing swordsman; he’s just a regular blacksmith’s son, so it wouldn’t make sense for him to be amazing at combat right off the bat.

Luckily, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II gives you lots of options to find your own playstyle. You don’t have to fight; you can use charm to get out of conflict, or you can even build on your stealth to take someone out before they know it. You can really bend the game to your own will.

1. Elden Ring

When Hidetaka Miyazaki and George R. R. Martin team up to create an RPG game, you already know it’ll be amazing. Ever since its release in 2022, Elden Ring has been incredibly popular with gamers and critics alike. It’s won many awards and is on top of a lot of ‘Best games ever made’ lists. One thing is for sure: an RPG fan can’t miss out on this one.

Elden Ring is a dark fantasy story. It’s set in a broken realm called the Lands Between, destroyed by a war between demigods with no clear victor. The demigods have since gone back to their respective realms, and this world fell further and further into destruction. You belong to a group of banished warriors who return to the Lands Between. Set with the quest to repair a cosmic artefact, defeat corrupted demigods, and become the new Elden Lord.

Elden Ring took many risks in its gameplay, but they were appreciated and well-received by its audience. For example, the game doesn’t have any markers, quest logs or journals. Rather than that, it’s built for the gamer to follow their natural instinct and explore the game this way. Thanks to this, the game doesn’t just feel ‘free’; it truly is.

As a soulslike, Elden Ring is a difficult game, but thanks to the freedom this game has, it doesn’t feel completely unforgiving. If there’s a boss that’s too difficult to beat, you’re not stuck in an endless loop where you’re defeated over and over again. Rather, you can venture to another area to find new gear or play a quest to level up your character. These items might just give you the extra push you need to make it through.
