If you’re a Netflix fan and a gamer, surely you haven’t missed the fact that more and more games get their very own Netflix series. Perhaps these shows will persuade you into playing the game, or maybe you liked the game so much you want to see more of it in the Netflix series. Here are some of the most popular video-game series you can watch on Netflix.
If you’re into a silver haired Henry Cavill wearing the hell out of very tight leather pants, The Witcher is the tv-show for you! Even though this blog is about videogame-to-Netflix adaptations, The Witcher actually shouldn’t be in this list. The series is based on a fantasy novel by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. The books however are perhaps a bit less famous as the CD Projekt Red’s Witcher game trilogy. Which isn’t surprising, as it’s one of the most popular RPGs of all time. The final installment of the game series called The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has even won quite some Game of the Year awards.
Writer Sapkowski claims he had little to do with the Witcher gaming series, but he has been a creative consultant on the Netflix show. That being said, if you’re a fan of CD Projekt Red’s Witcher games, you should definitely give the Netflix show a chance! Henry Cavill is an awesome Geralt and has worked very hard to copy Geralt of Rivia’s physique, sword-fighting skills and somewhat grumpy demeanor.
You will recognize a lot of the aspects that are very prominent in the game. Another big plus is the truly amazing monsters in the show that are just as thrilling as the ones you have to fight in the game. Just make sure you don’t hang on to the appearance and looks of (secondary) characters you know from the game and novel. Netflix has taken some liberties with that, but Geralt of Rivia< Yennefer and Dandelion(Jaskier in the series) are truly Spot On, so that makes up for it!
The series DOTA: Dragon’s Blood is based on the 2013 MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) video game called Dota 2. Developed by Valve Corporation, the Dota 2 game is a sequel to the Warcraft III-scenario ‘Defense of the Ancients’. In the game, there are 2 teams of 5 players that have to destroy the buildings of the opposing team known as the “Ancient” while defending their own at the same time. Each player controls one ‘Hero’ during the game, where you need to collect gold and XP to get better items and level up.
In the DOTA: Dragon’s Blood series the ‘Hero’ is a Dragon Knight named Davion who hunts and kills dragons to make the fantasy world he lives in a safer place. After the elder dragon Slyrak the Ember Eldwyrm merges with his soul, Davion teams up with moon princess Mirana and her bodyguard Marci to stop a demon named Terrorblade, who wants to kill all the dragons and collect their souls. This animated epic fantasy series combines the well known ‘Anime’ style with Western animation, which results in a very unique look and feel of this television series. A must-watch for anyone, whether you’re already a fan of the game or a complete newcomer to this genre!
In Minecraft: Story Mode, games and series are fused into an ultimate combination! This so-called 'episodic point-and-click graphic adventure video game' is a series and video game all wrapped up into one. In this interactive 'series' you play the leading role, where you search for useful items and solve puzzles along the way. You can also communicate with NPCs through so-called conversation trees that help you learn more about the (back)story and what you need to do to move forward in the game. Or series. What should we call this exactly?
The setting is of course the world you know from the Minecraft games, also called the "Overworld". You play as the main character Jesse and go in search of The Order of the Stone, five legendary adventurers who once saved the Minecraft world. Oh yes, don't forget: the choices you make in the game also affect the episode you're in, and the episodes that are coming. So that's really interactive Netflix!
For the gaming series of Castlevania we have to travel back into a time where Netflix didn't even exist yet! The first game of this series by Konami was released in 1986 on Nintendo’s Famicom Disk System. The first couple of Castlevania games are side-scrolling platform games that revolve mostly around horror and vampire stories. With Count Dracula as a returning main character, you can imagine what type of iconic spooky elements we’re dealing with in the games and the series alike.
The Castlevania series on Netflix is based on the classic Castlevania games from way back when, revolving around a vampire hunter that faces one after another supernatural beast, which are controlled by Dracula himself. If that isn’t a promising premise we don’t know what is! Not in the mood for Netflix, no big deal. Castlevania has also found its way into comics and other spin-off games. No wonder it’s Konami’s best-selling franchise. It’s vampire o’clock with this spooky series!
The open-world game Dragon’s Dogma was released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2012 by Capcom and also came out on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. As The Arisen you take on a quest to defeat an evil dragon named Grigori. The game is classified as an action role-playing hack and slash game, which means there will be blood for sure. The adventure takes place in the fantasy world of Gransys, where you must complete quests and combat monsters.
The Netflix series of the same name was released in 2020. It follows Ethan, who is now ‘The Arisen’, as he also combats the dragon who has stolen his heart. In the series, Ethan has to battle many other enemies just like in the game, but doing so means he loses a bit of his humanity every time he slays another opponent. There’s one season with 8 episodes of around 30 minutes, so this is pure binge-watch material for anyone who likes a good demon/dragon slaying show.
Together with Riot Games, Netflix will bring League of Legends to television in the form of Animated Event Series ‘Arcane’ which will premiere in the fall of 2021. The setting will be the utopian region of Piltover and the Zaun underground, where two iconic League champions will get their very own origin story.
League of Legends has already set a record in its esports World Championship competition, where over 1 billion hours of content was consumed worldwide. This made League of Legends the most watched esport. So it comes to no surprise that Netflix wants a slice of that cake. As for the fans, this promises to be another amazing TV adaptation of a popular gaming franchise!
And to end this article, we have a small teaser which is not Netflix related but even so, one to look out for! All fans of the emotional rollercoaster that was The Last Of Us (1 and 2) can start screaming into their pillow now, as HBO has announced that there will be a Last Of Us series, planned to start filming soon! Our favorite Mandalorian rockstar Pedro Pascal will fill the shoes of Joel, while his Game of Thrones colleague Bella Ramsey - which you undoubtedly remember as the bad-ass lady Lyanna Mormont in GoT - as Ellie. These two sound like the perfect fit for these roles. With a promising cast like this, we really have our hopes up for this upcoming series!
