Have you seen Uncharted in the cinema yet? This movie was inspired by the eponymous game ánd was produced by PlayStation Productions! What is PlayStation Productions and what can we expect from this company in the future? We have the scoop for you!
In 2019, Sony Interactive Entertainment launched a production company called PlayStation Productions. The mission of this company is turning Sony PlayStation video games into epic movies and TV series. To do so, PlayStation Productions works closely with the film and television division of Sony Pictures and the game development division of PlayStation Studios.
In 2020, Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra announced that there are three films and seven TV series coming up. The very first film, Uncharted, was released in early 2022, and the next film adaptation will most likely be Ghost of Tsushima. Currently known planned PlayStation TV series are God of War, The Last of Us and Twisted Metal. What the third film and other four TV series could be, we’ll have to wait and see!
With the release of the first PlayStation Productions movie in the cinemas, the production company's new animation can be seen. This animation features the latest PlayStation icons including Kratos, Sackboy, Nathan Drake and Joel and Ellie. It’ll appear at the start of PlayStation Productions movies and TV series, just like Disney and Marvel animations.
Check out the new animation below:
We expect PlayStation Productions films to be released in cinemas at first. Where the series (and eventually the films) can be streamed, will depend on Sony's agreements with streaming services or other platforms.
Uncharted was released in cinemas on March 17th, 2022. The games are about the thrilling adventures of treasure hunter Nathan Drake - played in the film by Spider-Man actor Tom Holland.
The film takes you on the first ever adventure of Nathan and his partner Victor 'Sully' Sullivan, played by Mark Wahlberg. Together they search for 'the greatest treasure that has never been found'. In addition, they discover the whereabouts of Nathan's missing brother.

In 2023, a series based on one of the most legendary games of all time, The Last of Us, is planned to be released. The TV series will see Joel and Ellie portrayed by Game of Thrones actress Bella Ramsey and the man behind the Mandalorian mask, Pedro Pascal.
The Last of Us is set in a post-apocalyptic United States. Ellie is said to be immune to the infection that turns people into zombie-like mutants. And in order to save the world, it's Joel's job to smuggle her out of quarantine and deliver her to the Fireflies, a militant organisation that seeks to develop a vaccine.

The expectations are sky-high! Fortunately, we have nothing to worry about. This is because, in addition to the strong cast, there are more impressive names behind this series. For example, the director is Craig Mazin, who also has the Chernobyl series on his CV, and the 'father' of The Last of Us, Neil Druckmann, who has constantly monitored the quality of the series.
The Last of Us is being produced by HBO, so to watch the series you're going to need an HBO Max subscription!
At the Consumer Electronics Show, Sony announced that there’ll be a live-action TV series of Twisted Metal. The lead character, John Doe, will be played by Anthony Mackie, who you may know as Falcon from the Captain America films and series.
John Doe is given the chance of a better life - if he manages to deliver a mysterious package. With the help of a trigger-happy car thief, he makes his way through the post-apocalyptic wilderness. During his mission, he encounters a dangerous clown driving a bizarre ice cream truck. Will he successfully deliver the package?

PlayStation Productions is also working on a film about the open-world action-adventure game Ghost of Tsushima. The game, and therefore the film, is about the samurai Jin Sakai. He is the last remaining member of his clan and it’s his mission to liberate the island of Tsushima from the Mongol invasion. In order to do this, he will have to break with his honour and his code to become the titular Ghost of Tsushima.
The Ghost of Tsushima film will be directed by Chad Stahelski, who is also known from the John Wick films. No further details on the film's development or release date are known at this time, but we do hope that the game's beloved foxes will make an appearance as well.

According to Deadline, the hugely popular God of War game series is coming to the small screen! At this stage, it’s unclear whether the series will be based on the older games revolving around Greek mythology, or the new games in which Kratos deals with figures from Nordic mythology. But given the huge success of the new God of War game, and the compelling dynamic between Kratos and his son Atreus, we assume that the writers of the series will choose Nordic mythology.
Prime Video is reportedly negotiating with PlayStation Studios for exclusive streaming rights to this mythological live-action series. Who will take on the role of Kratos, the God of War, will likely be revealed in the coming months!
Not all PlayStation Productions have been revealed yet, but that doesn't stop us from daydreaming about films and series that we would like to see. A film or TV series inspired by Horizon Zero Dawn and its sequel Horizon Forbidden West, for example, would be freakin’ awesome. Or what about Days Gone, or Bloodborne?
There are plenty of great games in the PlayStation catalogue for Sony to draw inspiration from. As soon as new titles have been announced, you'll find us on the front row seats!
Can't get enough of watching films and series? Then we have the perfect solution for you! With our PlayStation Plus subscriptions and PlayStation Store Cards there's enough from PlayStation to enjoy. Besides that, you can buy gift cards for streaming services like Netflix and Crunchyroll. And the great thing about this is that you are not tied to a subscription. How cool is that?
