After the initial announcement of Pokémon Scarlet & Violet earlier this year, we’ve finally received more information on the new Pokémon games in the most recent Pokémon Presents broadcast. A new trailer introduced the new Paldea region, new regional and Terastallized Pokémon, rideable Legendary Pokémon and much more. These are the 10 biggest new features in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet.
For the first time in a Pokémon game, you’ll be able to change your character’s eye shape and mouth shape. Other customization options that we’ve seen before in other games also return, such as the ability to change your hairstyle, hair color, eyebrows and clothing.
Pokémon Scarlet & Violet are set in the Paldea region, a diverse land with vast open spaces, lakes, wastelands and mountain ranges. Your guide in the Paldea region will be the trusty Rotom Phone, which has several apps such as the Pokédex and the map. The new region also introduces outdoor Pokémon centers that are scattered all over and light up at night.
Similar to previous Pokémon regions, the Paldea region is home to several regional Pokémon that can only be caught here. The first regional Pokémon that was announced is Paldean Wooper, a Poison/Ground variation of Wooper that can have the Poison Point and Water Absorb abilities.
Legendary Pokémon will be featured in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet right from the start. Both Miraidon and Koraidon can take on several forms to help you traverse the Paldea region.
Pokémon Scarlet & Violet introduce a brand new multiplayer feature named “Union Circle”. Using the Union Circle, you can adventure together with up to three friends. The Union Circle is part of a bigger only feature named the “Poké Portal”, which features multiplayer Tera Raid Battles, trading and battling.
A new phenomenon introduced in the Paldea region is the Terastal Phenomenon, which makes Pokémon shine and glimmer. When a Pokémon Terrastallizes, it will gain a special Tera Type, which is different from its regular type. You will need a Tera Orb to Terastallize Pokémon and this orb is only available to select trainers. Once you Terastallize a Pokémon you will also need to recharge the energy of the Tera Orb by touching crystals overflowing with Terastal energy or by going to a Pokémon Center.
Pokemon Scarlet & Violet are the very first open-world RPG in the series. This means that you can freely explore the Paldea region at your leisure and in any order you like. Additionally, the new games will feature smooth transitions from one part of the region to another, offering a seamless open world experience.
The new Pokémon games are centered around the Naranja Academy and the Uva Academy. People from all over Paldea come to these academies to hone their academics and Pokémon battling skills. As the main character in Scarlet & Violet, you’ll enroll in one of these academies, depending on the version of your game. After enrolling, you’re tasked with an independent study assignment: the Treasure Hunt. This entails that you’ll have to find your own treasure by discovering new places, meeting new people and accomplishing new goals.
Similar to the Raid Battles from Pokémon Sword & Shield, the new games introduce new Tera Raid Battles. In these Tera Raid Battle, you’ll team up with three other trainers to take on Terastallized wild Pokémon within a specific time limit. The battle system in Tera Raid Battle allows you to continuously attack without having to wait for other trainers. After you’ve defeated the Tera Pokémon within the given time limit, you’ll get a chance at catching them.
Naturally, the new trailer also revealed two new Pokémon that originate from the Paldea region.
Similar to other mainline Pokémon games, Pokémon Scarlet & Violet feature exclusive Pokémon that can only appear in a specific version of the game.
For instance, Larvitar and Stonjourner can only be caught in Pokémon Scarlet while Bagon and Eiscue only appear in Pokémon Violet.
Pokémon Scarlet & Violet feature three grand storylines that are weaved throughout your adventure. The first storyline focuses on battling gym leaders who can be challenged in any order you desire, unlike in previous Pokémon games. The other two storylines have not been revealed yet, but according to the Pokémon Company they will feature many trials and tribulations.
