Can you keep Xbox Game Pass games forever?

Free Xbox Game Pass games vs. discounted games

Whether you can keep playing your favorite Xbox Game Pass games, depends on whether the game was free in this premium subscription, or if you bought it for a discounted price.

Can I keep free Xbox Game Pass games?

No. If you get a game or DLC for free with Xbox Game Pass, you can play the game as long as you have the subscription and as long as the game does not leave the Xbox Game Pass library.

If one of the circumstances occurs, you will need to buy the game to continue playing it. Luckily, all your files and progress will be saved and you can keep playing where you left off

Can I keep Xbox Game Pass games I bought at a discount?

Yes, if you bought a discounted game with your Xbox Game Pass subscription, you can keep the game forever! It doesn’t matter if your subscription expires or if the game leaves the Xbox Game Pass library.

How long do games stay in the Xbox Game Pass library?

It varies from game to game how long they stay in the Xbox Game Pass library. Typically, a game will leave the library after 12 or 18 months. Want to know if your favourite games are leaving the library? Xbox posts updates every month with the games that are leaving and joining the library and on which dates this happens.

Can I keep my Xbox Live Gold games on Xbox Game Pass Core and now on Xbox Game Pass Essential?

True Xbox gamers might remember that there used to be an Xbox Live Gold membership. This subscription was then transformed to Xbox Game Pass Core and now changed to Xbox Game Pass Essential. But what about the games you purchased with Xbox Live Gold or Xbox Game Pass Core?

Don’t worry! Just like when the subscription changed from Xbox Live Gold to Xbox Game Pass Core, you get to keep all the games you bought with your previous subscription. Everything is automatically transferred, so you can just continue playing like you're used to.
