Horizon Forbidden West: How to get a free PS5 upgrade

Did you know you can easily save £10 on Horizon Forbidden West for PS5 by using the free PS4 to PS5 upgrade? Read on to find out how to get the free upgrade!

Published on: 02-02-2022

Is there a free PS4 to PS5 upgrade for Horizon Forbidden West?

Yes, Sony has confirmed in their blog that players will be able to upgrade their PS4 version of Horizon Forbidden West game to the PS5 version for free, regardless if they buy a physical or digital copy of the game. Initially, this wasn't the case and you would only be able to get access to both versions if you bought the more expensive Deluxe Edition of the game, but Sony reversed this decision after fan feedback.

How to save £10 with the free PS5 upgrade of Horizon Forbidden West

Horizon Forbidden West is available on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. However, the PS4 version of the game is currently priced at £59,99 while the PS5 version of the game is currently listed at £69,99. This is where that free PS4 to PS5 upgrade comes into play: you can save yourself some money by simply opting for the PS4 version and then upgrading to the PS5 version for free.

Are there disadvantages to buying the PS4 version over the PS5 version?

Does it really not matter whether you get the PS4 version and then upgrade to PS5, as opposed to buying the PS5 version outright? The answer is no, in both cases you will gain access to both the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game. The difference is that one of the two options saves you £10!

If you prefer buying physical games, then you might find it a disadvantage that the box of the PS4 version of the game has the PS4 logo on it instead of the PS5 logo. If you have neatly color-coded game shelves and would rather have the game box with the PS5 label on it, you might want to consider getting the PS5 version for £10 more.

Other than that there is a possibility that you can only start downloading the PS5 version when the release date has passed. If you directly buy the PS5 version, you can start installing the game from February 11, one week before the official release, so you can start playing immediately once the clock strikes midnight on February 18. This is called preloading.

When you buy the PS4 version, there is a big chance that you can only preload the PS4 version, and you will have to wait until February 18 before you can start upgrading your game to the PS5 version. If you really can't wait for the game, that could also be a reason why you'd want to opt for the PS5 version instead.

Horizon Forbidden West version differences between PS4 and PS5

Then what are the differences between the PS4 and PS5 versions exactly? The PS5 is a lot more powerful than the PS4 and the PS5 controller has unique features that aren't available on the PS4 controller. Therefore the differences mainly concern the graphical appearance, loading times and the performance of the game, which will be better on PS5 thanks to improved hardware.

For example, the PS5 version supports a performance mode boasting 60 frames per second and uses additional rendering and lighting technology to create crisper visuals. The PS5 also uses a special rendering technique for waves which makes underwater scenes more visually appealing. Additionally, the PS5 version utilizes the unique Adaptive Triggers and Haptic Feedback features which are only available on PS5 DualSense controllers, and loading times are cut to a minimum thanks to the powerful SSD of the PS5.

Aside from these examples, there are no gameplay or story differences between the two versions.

How to buy the digital PS4 version of Horizon Forbidden West on PS5?

Unfortunately Sony has made it rather difficult to take advantage of the free upgrade on PS5. Most gamers are used to buying their digital games through the PlayStation Store on their PS5 console, but if you look up Horizon Forbidden West on the PS5 Store, you'll find that only the PS5 version is listed there. And yes, that one is £10 more expensive!

To buy the PS4 version of Horizon Forbidden West, you will have to visit the PlayStation Store through an internet browser on your pc or mobile phone. Through the browser you will be able to find both the PS4 as well as the PS5 version of the game. To make things easier for you, we have the link to the PS4 version for you here. If you still have a PS4 console, you can buy the PS4 version through the PlayStation Store of your PS4 as well.

Don't forget to top up your PlayStation Store wallet to £60 by buying a PS Store card at Startselect. You receive the code instantly which you can redeem in the PlayStation Store in your browser or on your PS5 console. Once you've topped up your balance with the required funds, you can buy Horizon Forbidden West for PS4 on the PlayStation Store in your browser. After that, all you have to do is wait for the release date!

How to upgrade the PS4 version to the PS5 version of Horizon Forbidden West?

Upgrading the PS4 version of Horizon Forbidden West is quick and easy, especially if you buy the game digitally from the PlayStation Store. You will most likely have to wait until the release date (February 18) before the PS5 upgrade is available to download.

  • If you purchased a digital copy of Horizon Forbidden West, you’ll automatically receive the free PS5 upgrade upon downloading the game from the PlayStation Store on your PS5.
  • If you own a physical copy of the game, you’ll want to insert the PS4 disc into your PS5. You’ll then be prompted to download additional data in order to upgrade your version. Once this download is complete, you can enjoy all the benefits of the PS5 version. Do keep in mind that you will still need the PS4 disc to play the game.

Can I transfer my Horizon Forbidden West save file from PS4 to PS5?

Yes, you can transfer your Horizon Forbidden West save file from PS4 to PS5. This means that you can always pick up right where you left off once you decide to upgrade. Similarly, you can also transfer your save data from Horizon Zero Dawn (the first Horizon game) from PS4 to PS5. To transfer your save files, simply boot up your PS5 and head over to Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer > Continue. Then select your PS4 console and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the save data transfer.

Horizon Forbidden West upgrade is the final free PS4 to PS5 upgrade from Sony

Unfortunately, the free upgrade for Horizon Forbidden West will be the final free PS4 to PS5 upgrade for PlayStation first party games. Sony has announced that all future games from their own studios released on both consoles will offer a £10 upgrade path for customers that want to upgrade from the PS4 version to the PS5 version. This means that upcoming releases such as Gran Turismo 7 and God of War Ragnarok will not use this free PS4 to PS5 upgrade system.

Can you preload Horizon Forbidden West?

You can start preloading Horizon Forbidden West from February 11 on PS4 and PS5, provided you have bought the game digitally on the PlayStation Store. The game will have a file size of around 90GB, so it’s a good idea to pre-order in advance and start downloading on February 11, so you can jump right into the game on the release date, which is one week later. However, there is a possibility that preloading the PS5 version of the game won't be possible with the PS4 version until the game is officially released on February 18.
