Attack on Titan

The Japanese name for Attack on Titan is 進撃の巨人 (Shingeki no Kyojin) which literally means Advancing Giants. The show first aired in Japan in 2013. Attack on Titan takes place in a world where people live in cities surrounded by huge walls, in order to keep the Titans out. These humanoid giants are known to devour any human they get their hands on.

In the first season of Attack on Titan you’ll meet Eren Jaeger, his adoptive sister Mikasa Ackermann and their friend Armin Arlelt. They have all had a traumatic experience in the past, as a Colossal Titan destroyed their homes and killed Eren’s mother. Now, the group has joined the elite Scout Regiment to fight the Titans outside of the city walls, to get revenge and take back the land that was once theirs.

But that’s only the beginning of the story! Since 2013, Attack on Titan is currently on its fourth and final season. The first part of this 4th season has aired and can be watched already. The second part of The Final Season was announced to go on hiatus until winter 2022. So you will actually have something to look forward to, if you start watching Attack on Titan now!

My Hero Academia

My Hero Academia, or 僕のヒーローアカデミア, Boku no Hīrō Academia follows the adventures of young Izuku Midoriya, a so called Quirk because he is born without superpowers. Nonetheless, he still dreams of becoming a superhero. He then gets scouted by All Might, the most famous superhero of Japan. All Might shares a part of his powers with Izuku when he sees his potential, after Izuku saves a bully from a Villain. These powers also allow him to attend a special high school training academy especially designed for Heroes. Ofcourse, that’s when the mayhem truly sets off!

My Hero Academia has been immensely popular for some time now. Next to the 5 seasons that are currently ongoing, there have also been two movies so far (Two Heroes from 2018 and Heroes: Rising from 2019) and there’s a third movie in development (World Heroes’ Mission, set to come out this year.) So once you start watching My Hero Academia at least you’ll know for sure there’s plenty of it, all stacked up and ready to binge-watch to your heart’s content!

Haikyū!!

In Japanese, you write Haikyū in Kanji 排球, which stands for “volleyball”. And that, in a nutshell, is what the series is about. Both the anime and the manga on which this series is based have received very positive reviews. The story follows High School student Shoyo Hinata who slowly but surely becomes obsessed with the sport of volleyball after he sees a game on TV in which Karasuno High School is participating.

Hinata is very athletic himself, although his short stature seems to be an issue. He becomes inspired after seeing a player from the Karasuno team, nicknamed ‘Little Giant’ who is also small, but very skilled at the game. This gives him the confidence to join his own school's volleyball club. Only… it turns out that the club consists of only himself. His friends then help him practice to get better at volleyball. Fortunately, Hinata has the ability to make giant vertical jumps, something that comes in handy when playing volleyball.

Hinata is also admitted to Karasuno High School, where his idol Little Giant once played on the volleyball team. His rival Kageyama joins this team too. Unfortunately, the Karasuno team isn’t winning anymore and they’re now mockingly called 'The Wingless Crows'. Time for Hinata to put this volleyball team back on the map and restore Karasuno's reputation! This series has been spread over 4 seasons and 4 Original Video Animations (OVAs) with enough new volleyball adventures to go ‘round. Definitely worth a look!

Jujutsu Kaisen

In this Dark-Fantasy series we start from the concept that every living being carries a Cursed Energy. Normal people have no control over this energy, so they constantly emit and lose their Cursed Energy uncontrollably and without noticing. These Curses then re-emerge in the form of monstrous spirit-beings that are a danger to humanity. Not cool! That’s why there are Jujutsu Sorcerers to fight these evil Curses. Jujutsu sorcerers do have control of the Cursed Energy in their body and can therefore wield their special powers to fight Curses.

Time to introduce our protagonist Yuji. This boy is super fit and athletic, but prefers to spend his free time on an Occult Research Club rather than on extracurricular sports activities and training. It’s also more convenient to combine with visiting his dying grandfather more often. Meanwhile, a talisman in the shape of a rotting finger is brought to life by the Occult Research Club. This basically becomes a beacon for all kinds of Curses, which are now targeting the school. To protect the others, Yuji swallows this evil finger (because why wouldn’t he) and becomes the host of an evil and very powerful Curse. The now-possessed Yuji must enroll in the Jujutsu High School to learn how to survive this possession. Obviously, he also goes on the most wildly exciting adventures, because getting possessed after swallowing a demon finger doesn't likely happen every day. Better get some good stories out of it!

Hunter x Hunter

In this anime series you follow a little boy named Gon Freecss who suddenly finds out that his own father, who he thought was deceased, turns out to be a world famous 'Hunter'. Not some glorified forest ranger keeping the rabbit population under control. No, in this series the Hunters are an elite group of highly trained people who are able to track down rare beasts and secret treasures. As soon as Gon finds out that his father is still alive, and a successful Hunter too, he sets out to take an exam to become a Hunter as well.

Now this exam isn't exactly a bunny shooting exercise either. Hunters need to have all kinds of special skills with the help of 'Nen', a practice to keep the aura under control and apply various aura-based techniques. Gon doesn't have to face this adventure and the search for his father alone, as he also meets Kurapika, Leorio and Killua who help him "hunt" for his father. Are you into adventure, fantasy and a touch of martial arts? Then this is the perfect show for you!

Sword Art Online

With the arrival of NerveGear, a helmet that stimulates all five senses of the user through the brain, gaming suddenly becomes a completely new experience. In the virtual reality MMORPG called Sword Art Online (SAO) the player enters a cyberspace consisting of several virtual reality worlds, in which you can control your in-game characters with this special NerveGear helmet on.

One day, 10.000 new, first time players log into the SAO game with their NerveGear and discover that there is no way to log out again. Kayaba, the developer of the game, states that the players must first beat all 100 floors of the in-game castle called Aincrad. Removing the NerveGear from your head or your in-game character dying in cyberspace during the SAO game will result in actual death. Now there’s a glitch you don’t want!

This is where our hero Kirito comes in, as he was one of the 1000 beta testers of the game. With his experience in VR he tries to save the other players by going solo at first, but making some friends along the way. Time to free all the trapped players from this cyberspace nightmare. Might make you think twice before going on your own VR adventure, right?

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (ジョジョの奇妙な冒険 aka: JoJo no Kimyō na Bōken) is indeed what the title says: a bizarre adventure. It’s actually a series of several adventures that all revolve around members of the Joestar family. All members of this family find - in their own unique way - that they possess special powers to defeat supernatural enemies.

Both the animated series and the manga from which it is derived are split into several parts, each telling the story of a different family member. However, all their names can be abbreviated to JoJo, so the title of the series still stands.

The second season of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is called Stardust Crusaders, followed by Season 3: Diamond is Unbreakable and Season 4: Golden Wind. Stone Ocean has recently been announced, which means that the fifth season of this series is already on its way. It's something different, but if you like bizarre adventures, this is definitely recommended! This anime has also been translated into a Live Action movie, if that's more your thing.

Death Note

You've probably heard of this incredibly popular anime. The story begins with the exemplary student Light, the son of the local police chief. Light finds a mysterious notebook that kills the person whose name is written in it. Also attached to the book is a Shinigami (a Death God) named Ryuk. Ryuk was the one who dropped this dangerous notebook into the human world out of boredom, to see what would happen. Naturally, people start dying. So Light's father sets up an investigation team to find the culprit, not knowing it’s closer to home than he would ever imagine.

Finally, the genius L is called in to aid the police with finding the person behind all these unexplained murders. L is the same age as Light and the situation quickly turns into a cat-and-mouse game in which they try to outsmart each other again and again. Light delves deeper and deeper into the powers of the Death Note, and L, along with the police, is constantly on his tail. A series full of plot twists that will definitely keep you captivated!
