Will Call of Duty ever make another World War 2 game?
There have been many Call of Duty games set during World War 2. These titles are very beloved by fans and still rank high on best COD games lists. However, we haven’t seen a COD WW2 title in a while. So, will there ever be another WW2 COD game? This is our theory.
Previous COD WW2 games
In total, Call of Duty has made 57 mainline games. Out of all of those, 10 are set during World War 2:
- Call of Duty (2003)
- Call of Duty: United Offensive (2004)
- Call of Duty: Finest Hour (2004)
- Call of Duty 2 (2005)
- Call of Duty 2: Big Red One (2005)
- Call of Duty 3 (2006)
- Call of Duty: World at War (2008)
- Call of Duty: World at War: Final Fronts (2008)
- Call of Duty: WWII (2017)
- Call of Duty: Vanguard (2021)
It isn't that weird that there are so many World War 2 games in the COD franchise, since it's the theme of the first game they ever made. In the list, you can see that there were a lot of games around this war made in the beginning. Later on, they became scarcer, and it’s been over 5 years since we last saw one. Why is this?
World War 2 fatigue
When there’s too much of something in a gaming franchise, gamers sometimes get bored with it. Some gamers also think this is what happened with World War 2 in Call of Duty. One user on Reddit analysed all the Call of Duty games set in World War 2 to dive into this fatigue. According to them, the problem is that most of the World War 2 campaign focuses on the same area: The Western Front. Of the 157 campaigns set during this war, 76 are on the Western Front, which is about 48%. He theorises that the World War 2 fatigue mostly stems from this fact. Because this area is so overrepresented, it can feel like you’re constantly replaying the same story.

Reception of COD WW2 games
This theory could also be reflected in how the Call of Duty games are received. Many of them, especially older COD games about World War 2, are often at the top of the best-game lists. These are Call of Duty 2, World at War and WWII. However, other WW2 COD games are often regarded as the worst in the series. These are often Call of Duty 3, Finest Hour and Vanguard. Especially Vanguard was very poorly received for its uninspired and rushed story. This further proves the point that players are tired of these stories. Since Vanguard is also the last WW2 game we saw, it may explain why the creators have stayed away from this topic for so long.
Will there ever be another COD game about WW2?
So the real question is: will there ever be another Call of Duty game set in World War 2? It seems unlikely that Call of Duty will hold off on this time period forever. However, we of course have no idea when this will happen. All the latest COD games like Black Ops 7 and the upcoming Modern Warfare 4 focus on modern stories, sometimes even set in the future. With this in mind, it doesn’t seem like another WW2 COD game is coming anytime soon, but we can never say for sure, of course. Maybe once players get tired of modern stories, we’ll go back to older WW2 games.
