For the ones who aren’t aware: the Underground Railroad was a secret network of roads and safe houses that was used to free slaves in the 1700s in the United States. Colson Whitehead reimagined this phenomenon in his book. He turned it into an actual subway system, complete with trains and secret agents. The famous shower scene from Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho lives in all of our heads rent-free. Always wanted to know why these characters are the way that they are? Bates Motel is the series for you! This show is set in the creepy motel of Hitchcock's masterpiece, but it takes place before the film. We follow Norman Bates and his mother Norma as they try to deal with the death of their father and husband. Aside from that, duo also struggles to handle Norman’s deteriorating illness, which is reaching dangerous levels.

7. Hazbin Hotel

The synopsis of this series might sound a bit crazy, but we’ll do our best. Hell has a problem, because this fire-filled place is extremely overpopulated. That’s why Heaven organises an annual extermination to get rid of the surplus of souls. Charlie Morningstar, the princess of Hell, wants to change this. So she created the Hazbin Hotel: a place where sinners can redeem themselves and earn a place in Heaven. It’s an interesting premise, which is brought to life through colourful animation and even big musical numbers.

  • Creators: Vivienne Medrano
  • Actors: Erika Henningsen, Stephanie Beatriz, Blake Roman
  • Seasons: 2
  • Episode runtime: 30 minutes
  • Release 1st season: 2024

6. We Were Liars

Talk about a PLOT TWIST! We Were Liars is an adaptation of the famous young-adult book of the same name by E. Lockhart. We think it’s best to know not too much about this show, but we can share a little bit. Cady Sinclair comes from the wealthy Sinclair family and spends her summers on a private island with her family. However, one summer goes really wrong. Cady suffers a terrible accident and is left with amnesia. Determined to find out what happened, she returns to the island, where nothing seems to be the same any more.

More info:

  • Creators: Julie Plec, Carina Adly MacKenzie
  • Actors: Emily Alyn Lind, Caitlin FitzGerald, Mamie Gummer
  • Seasons: 1
  • Episode runtime: 55 minutes
  • Release 1st season: 2025

5. Overcompensating

Awkwardness gets a new meaning in Overcompensating. The series follows Benny in his freshman year of college. But Benny is very deep in the closet and determined to keep the illusion of his heterosexuality up, even if it ruins his relationships with other people. The series is seriously funny, but also depicts very well the pressure that can come with feeling like you don’t belong. This is especially well portrayed by the incredible performances of Benito Skinner and Wally Baram.

More info:

  • Creators: Benito Skinner
  • Actors: Benito Skinner, Wally Baram, Mary Beth Barone
  • Seasons: 1
  • Episode runtime: 35 minutes
  • Release 1st season: 2025

4. Fleabag

Being in your 30s is not always sunshine and rainbows. Fleabag is about a free-spirited and humoristic, but also angry and misguided 33-year-old woman trying to find her way in life. She’s dealing with a recent tragedy, that she can’t seem to come to terms with. That’s why she tries desperately to prove to everyone, and mostly to herself, that she’s totally fine. This leads her from one complicated situation into the other, where she often ends up as the bad guy. Although this all sounds very dramatic, Fleabag is filled with sharp sarcasm and dark humour. Above all, this show is just very, very relatable.

More info:

  • Creators: Phoebe Waller-Bridge
  • Actors: Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Sian Clifford, Olivia Colman
  • Seasons: 2
  • Episode runtime: 25 minutes
  • Release 1st season: 2016

3. Fallout

Gamers eat your heart out! One of the most interesting gaming series was turned into a TV show for Amazon Prime. Fallout is set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. The world was destroyed by a nuclear disaster and now people are forced to live under the ground. Instead of the usual bleak and tragic shows that make up this genre (like another fan-favourite called The Last of Us), Fallout is a surprisingly funny show. It’s filled with dark comedy, witty dialogue and sharp social commentary, perfectly capturing the feeling of the games.

More info:

  • Creators: Graham Wagner, Geneva Robertson-Dworet
  • Actors: Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Walton Goggins
  • Seasons: 1
  • Episode runtime: 55 minutes
  • Release 1st season: 2024

2. The Boys

Another superhero show? Well, don’t judge this one too fast! In The Boys we follow a group of superheroes, but instead of giving us hope, they represent some of humanity’s worst. Corruption, egoism, brainwashing, and greediness: that’s what these heroes are made of. What makes this series so appealing to us, is how real it could be. The superhero team is run like a corporate machine, where image and damage control is everything. At every twist and turn, we can’t help but think: this is probably what superheroes would be like if they were actually in our world…

More info:

  • Creators: Eric Kripke
  • Actors: Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr
  • Seasons: 4
  • Episode runtime: 60 minutes
  • Release 1st season: 2019

1. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power might be one of the most watched shows on Amazon Prime. This series is set a millennial before the events of the legendary Lord of the Rings films. The series was mostly based on the books by Tolkien, which means it’s a real treat for the hardcore fans. But there’s also enough to enjoy for more casual watchers. Get ready for cinematic battles, interesting lore and politics, but most of all: beautiful shots of Middle Earth.

More info:

  • Creators: John D. Payne, Patrick McKay
  • Actors: Morfydd Clark, Charlie Vickers, Charles Edwards
  • Seasons: 2
  • Episode runtime: 70 minutes
  • Release 1st season: 2022
