It’s almost here! The Last of Us Part II Remastered will come out January 19th for the PlayStation 5 console. Finally, we can (re)experience the emotional journey of Ellie and Abby as they embark on a story of trauma and closure. This updated version of the popular game will have a ton of new features that allow you to experience the story in a whole new way.
The Last of Us Part II Remastered follows the same story as the original release of The Last of Us Part II. You accompany Ellie as she journeys through a post-apocalyptic America to seek revenge on a mysterious militia. Abby, a new character in the story, is also on a mission to avenge her murdered father.
The game switches between Ellie and Abby’s story and makes you empathise with both characters, even when they come face to face. It’s a heartbreaking story about how trauma and revenge can affect a person's decisions and have an impact on the people around them. The stories will be even more moving in the remastered version of the game, with a new gaming module and levels that’ll immerse you deeper into the stories.
One of the biggest new features on The Last of Us Part II Remastered is the Survival mode called No Return. In this mode you can choose from a bunch of characters, some of which are playable for the first time, to play a survival style game with. The mode has you battle against all sorts of enemies in encounters that are randomised.
Each character has their own unique set of skills that’ll help you in the battles, while the chance encounters allow for a lot of twists and turns that you will not see coming. As you play through these runs you unlock new characters, skins, weapons and more.
The remastered version of The Last of Us Part II will also include new locations to discover. In The Lost Levels, you get to check out playable levels that were cut from the original game. These aren’t completely finished, but more early-development pieces.
The Lost Levels will include commentary of the game developers where they explain the intentions of different aspects in a scene. This will give you a unique look behind the curtains and a glimpse in the creative process of Naughty Dog, the developer of The Last of Us series.
Speedrunner fanatics also have something to look forward to in The Last of Us Part II Remastered: the game will have a special speedrunning feature! This unlockable feature was included in The Last of Us Part I and will work the same in the remastered version of the second game. Will you impress everyone with a record time?
The playable guitar section in the original The Last of Us Part II game was a real fan favourite. That’s why the developers included a Guitar Free Play Mode in the remastered version. In this fun feature, you can show off your musical talent on a bunch of unlockable instruments.
Of course The Last of Us Part II Remastered also comes with a bunch of technical updates. For example in Performance Mode, visuals have been upscaled from 1440p to 4K and the new release will have a VRR option for TVs that support this technology. With increased texture resolution, upgraded Level-of-Detail distances, improved shadow quality, animation sampling rate, and more, you’ll be fully immersed into the stories of Ellie and Abby.
