Boston, the year 2287. A nuclear war forced humanity into bunkers known as Vaults. For years mankind survived in these underground structures, but now - 201 years after the bombs dropped - it's your time to step out into the world again. Also, your son is gone and you really want to find him.
Fallout 4 follows the same basic principles as Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. From the moment you step out of the Vault, you're free to go and do whatever you like. You can help the locals in finding their lost pets or deliver some goods for them, or you can focus on getting back your son.
A big new feature is constructing settlements and buildings. Merchants and other characters can even inhabit the settlements that you've build, but they will need food and water to survive. Your settlement can also get attacked by the less friendly inhabitants of the world, so defending it with a bunch of turrets is probably a good idea.
When it comes to the shooting mechanic itself, the V.A.T.S. (Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System) makes its return. This allows you to dramatically slow down the game and focus on shooting individual parts of your attacker's body. Of course shooting the head deals extra damage, but the chance to actually hit it is way lower than shooting the body.
Like most RPG's, you will regularly have to make a choice during the story. How you interact with the characters in the world and how you solve certain missions, will determine how your story plays out.
Ten years after Fallout 2, Bethesda rebooted the franchise with Fallout 3 in 2008. The isometric perspective and turn-based combat were ditched, but the setting, conversation-based gameplay and the freedom to go and do whatever you liked remained. Players loved it and the franchise earned its way back into hearts and minds of many gamers.
