To nobody's surprise, Pokémon GO was the most popular app on Apple's App Store last year. In part thanks to the game, 2016 turned out to be quite a record-breaking year overall.

Although several App Store records were broken last year, the busiest day ever for Apple's platform was the first day of this year. January 1st saw nearly $240 million in purchases on the App Store, says Apple in a press release. Since the App Store launched in 2008, developers have earned over $60 billion, while 2016 alone was good for $20 billion. Those are some pretty insane numbers. There's a total of 2.2 million apps on the Store right now, up over 20% from last year.
Of course Pokémon GO was the most popular app last year, but Super Mario Run did great as well. While Apple's statement didn't provide any solid numbers on any of the games individually, we know that Pokémon was up to 75 million downloads as early as its launch month of July last year (and 100 million in August). Super Mario Run was good for around 90 million downloads in its first month, but "only" 3 million people actually bought the full game after the trial. Still, that's around $30 million in revenue. Not too shabby!
