Five best additions to LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens

After a massively successful new movie last year, Star Wars goes back to the massively successful LEGO game-franchise as well. And LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens brings some additions we’re really enjoying.

The LEGO games have always been a great success. Whether it was Star Wars, Batman, Harry Potter or Jurassic Park, gamers from all ages were enjoying the silly humour and creative puzzle-solving of these games. But the formula was growing a bit stale after so much titles that were all built on pretty much the same gameplay mechanics.

That’s why developer TT Games had to mix things up a bit for LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens. And they did, because this is the most fun we’ve had in a LEGO game in years. Here’s the additions that make The Force Awakens a great game.

Multi-builds

One of the most important differences are the multi-builds. Creating just one contraption out of a pile of LEGO blocks was never really a challenge in the earlier LEGO games. You’d just press a button and the game would sort itself out. But in The Force Awakens, you’ll almost always have a choice between two or three different schematics at the same time.

Thanks to multi-blocks, you can solve puzzles in multiple ways, giving you additional paths towards the same objective or opening up secret passages to unlockable features. It also makes some puzzles a little bit more challenging, as you have to figure out the right order of building mostly through trial-and-error.

Shoot-outs

Another completely new feature to the LEGO series are the shoot-outs. In almost every level there’s a segment that will remind you of Gears of War, with chest-high walls to crouch behind and waves of enemies to shoot at. Most of the time these segments feature some kind of puzzle-mechanic as well, where you’ll have to scan enemy structures for weaknesses or shoot objects in a certain order.

This doesn’t mean LEGO Star Wars is a shooter now, or that its shooting segments come anywhere close to real shooters. But they’re a nice break from puzzling or smashing crates for coins.

BB-8

The moment we saw BB-8 in the very first The Force Awakens trailer, the droid rolled its way into our hearts. And those who’ve seen the movie (as you should have), know that BB-8 has quite a big role to play in the story, especially in the first part. That means you’re spending a good portion of the game with this adorable little robot.

While BB-8 might lack Finn’s firepower or Rey’s agility, it’s great fun to roll around and zap those Stormtroopers back to their Death Star. He can also reach otherwise inaccessible areas through vents, launch himself onto platforms or open electrical doors. This is definitely the droid we’ve been looking for!

Dogfights in space

Ok, the space battles are nothing new to the LEGO Star Wars games. I mean, what’s Star Wars without a good X-Wing vs Tie-Fighter battle? But that doesn’t mean they’re any less fun in The Force Awakens. Especially the parts where you get complete freedom to fly around and shoot other spacecrafts to bits are great fun, while the more ‘on-rails’ parts make you feel like an expert pilot. Especially escaping from Jakku in the Millennium Falcon is a great segment, because of the fluid movements and stunts you can do with Solo’s ship.

Secret missions

LEGO Star Wars follows the story from The Force Awakens quite faithfully, but it also adds some extra ‘secret’ missions that elaborate on the story. How did Lor San Tekka find that map to Luke Skywalker’s location? How did Poe Dameron free Admiral Ackbar from captivity?

You can find out by unlocking and playing all these extra missions, that describe events that were not shown in the movies. It’s a nice incentive to scour the entire game for all the extra’s, because you’ll never know what secret stuff you might find.
