ARMS contains a total of ten characters with their own abilities. Some characters are quick but fragile, while others are slow but strong. Additionally, each character has a unique ability they can use. Ribbon Girl can jump multiple times into the air, Master Mummy can heal himself when defending and Twintelle manipulates time by avoid blows. There's something for everyone, but every character is capable of holding its own.
Good controls are critical for a game like ARMS and Nintendo has certainly taking a risk in using the less popular motion control feature. Luckiy, ARMS ranks amongst the best motion control games. It's easy to learn, but hard to master. It's also possible to play ARMS with a normal controller. This takes a bit more time, but works fine.
Ready. Set. Fight!
There's different ways to show your prowess in ARMS. During the Grand Prix you take on ten opponents, either alone or with a friend. Not all competitions in the game are about boxing, as sometimes you'll find yourself playing a game of volleyball or basketball. This adds some nice variety to the game. Fights usually don't take longer than a minute, so ARMS is perfect if you just want to play a quick match.
You can choose to play with up to four friends. In this case, you'll be matched up two against two. The minigames can also be played with two or more players. This makes the game a perfect title to play splitscreen. Are your friends far away? Play online together and take on the world!
Finally, you can play ARMS on your own, either casually or competitive. When playing casually, you'll be put into a lobby and matched against two or four other players in random game modes. Choose to focued on Ranked Match, and you'll receive a ranking that rises when you win a lot. Matches are short, but very addicting and fun. Because you receive a rank, you're matched against players with a similar skill level. This vastly improves the online experience.
All in all, ARMS is a game to get lost in for hours. The principle of simple, but the execution is sublime. The different characters and boxing gloves make for varied fights with a ton of strategy. In addition to this, the game is quite difficult at times and the harder AI difficulties pack a real punch. Nintendo has certainly hit the sweet spot with this one!
