Guild of Dungeoneering released on PC last year, but everything about the game looked like it would fit perfectly on a mobile platform. Last week, the game launched on iOS and Android, with support for both phones and tablets.
Guild of Dungeoneering is a game about running your own guild filled with adventurers. And about exploring dungeons, killing monsters and searching for treasure. But unlike other dungeon-crawlers, you don’t directly control your character. Instead you’ll build the dungeon for him, using a set of cards dealt to you after each turn. By placing treasures and monsters in his path, you’ll power him up and acquire gear that you can use to complete the mission of that specific dungeon. Sometimes you’ll have to find an X amount of treasure, other times there’s a strong boss waiting at the end of the dungeon.
Combat is turn-based as well. You pick up to three cards from your deck and play one of them each turn. Usually you can see the card your opponent will play, so you can counter if your cards allow it. This makes combat, even though it’s fairly simple with only two types of attack (physical and magical), surprisingly tactical.
The game will remind you of the good old pen-and-paper role-playing games of old, not in the last place because the graphics are completely based on graphpaper and hand-drawn doodles. Even the fights are stylized with paper cut-outs of fireballs and shields.
The soundtrack deserves a separate mention, because the entire game is narrated by a bard. This singer has some silly songs about what happens in your game. That can sting a little when he’s ridiculing you for failing a mission or letting one of your dungeoneers die, but most of the time it’s pretty funny.
Guild of Dungeoneering is available in the App Store and the Play Store for €3,99 and €4,39 respectively. If you want to play on iOS, make sure you have enough iTunes credit or buy some here on Startselect! (not yet available in all regions)
