Are you in the mood for playing a challenging puzzle game that, aside from being good fun, will make you doubt your own mind? If the answer to that question is ‘yes’, Causality might be the game for you.
In Causality, you are tasked with escorting a team of lost astronauts to safety. The game consists of a series of isometric levels that each represent a ‘brief but hazardous moment in time’. Each level contains one or more astronauts and the goal of each level is to move each astronaut to its own color-indicated tile. The astronauts automatically move over the tiles, and the player can manipulate their direction by turning tiles with arrows on them. Levels also contain dangers and obstacles, such as switches that need to be pressed or monsters hiding beneath tiles. This admittedly does not sound very original, but there is one thing that sets causality apart from other puzzle apps: its use of time.
Time is an integral part of Causality’s gameplay. The app grants you control over time, allowing you to make it move forward by swiping down, and to reverse it by swiping up. If you do nothing, time stays still, allowing you to plan and prepare the correct paths for your astronauts to walk. Each level takes place in a set timeframe that represents the time left to solve the stage and indicates upcoming dangers to avoid. Unless you’re gifted with an incredible capacity to predict future events, Causality will partially be a game of trial and error. Luckily, the game’s system of turning back time with a swipe of your fingers lends itself perfectly for this.
The point where the game truly gets mind-blowing is when time portals are introduced. These portals send an astronaut back in time to a moment earlier in the timeline before the astronaut has entered the time-portal, leaving you with two astronauts until the astronaut has entered the time portal. Is your head hurting yet? These past and present versions of the same astronaut will be able to help, but also hinder each other. These time loops mean that you must work with your past self to guide the astronauts to safety, and presumably blow your mind in the process.
Causality costs €2,29 and is available for both IOS and Android. If you need more credit to download this game and more excellent games like it, you know where to find it. (availability depending on region).
