The winner for this category was unanimous at the office. The title goes to a familar face in a new world.
Despite all the beautiful games, booths, trailers, DLC and who knows what else, there is only room for one game to win E3. The game that impressed the most on all fronts. From gameplay to visuals, and mechanics to music. The one game that will stay in our head until we have completed it again and again. The game that we will talk about for months to come. This E3, there were plenty of candidates, but most of them failed to impress in at least one aspect, leaving them out of the running for victory.
The one game that ticked all boxes, and unanimously won E3 2017 for all of us at Startselect, came from none other than Nintendo. After a rough period during the WiiU era, things are looking up for the legendary Japanese publisher/developer with the release of the Switch and their phenomenal Zelda launch title. This E3 marks the glorious return of the world’s best known Italian plumber, who aims to take the platform crown once again.
Winner: Super Mario Odyssey (Nintendo)
The world was anxious to see gameplay from the next instalment in the “core” Mario franchise. While many people have praised all their semi-3D games, there was always the lingering hunger for a full-blown 3D Mario game, the first one since both Galaxy games on the Wii.
Super Mario Odyssey delivers on all fronts, as it surprised everyone with creativity, innovation and fun, incredibly impressive for a series which core concept has remained the same for 25 years! The new worlds, Cappy, Co-op, humans, New Donk City, and many more exciting things were shown and playable during E3.
Nintendo sure took its time coming up with this new entry in the Mario series, but boy have they once again taken everything from the series and twisted it in yet another direction. The amount of fun and creativity oozing from every second of gameplay we saw excites us beyond belief, and solidifies the faith many fans had of Nintendo returning to glory once again.
If you don’t have a Switch right now, you sure as hell will October 27th. If only they were available somewhere……
